India has become the second-largest manufacturing hub for mobile phones due to significant investments from manufacturers and component companies. India is set to export about 22% of its assembled mobile phones in 2023, according to Counterpoint Research. Mobile phone exports from India reached $5.5 billion in the April-August period of FY24, compared to $3 billion in the same period the previous fiscal year. The country is expected to cross Rs 1,20,000 crore in mobile phone exports for the current fiscal year, with Apple leading the market. However, smartphone shipments from original design manufacturers (ODMs) and Independent Design Houses (IDHs) declined by 6% YoY in H1 2023. The decline was driven by weak performances from Samsung, Xiaomi, and Lenovo, offset by Vivo, HONOR, and Transsion Group. The 'Big 3' ODMs—Huaqin, Longcheer, and Wingtech—dominated the global smartphone ODM/IDH industry, accounting for 76% of the market in H1 2023.
