Following an attack by Hamas on Israel, Elon Musk's social network, X, became inundated with fake videos, photos, and misleading information about the conflict. Disinformation also spread on other social networks like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. X allowed anyone to pay for verification, leading to disinformation issues, and large-scale layoffs in X's Trust and Safety teams exacerbated the problem. While X took steps to remove Hamas-affiliated accounts and posts with graphic content and hate speech, it faced challenges in addressing the proliferation of disinformation. Social media platforms have struggled to combat disinformation during real-world conflicts. The disinformation also spread between platforms, making it difficult for users to discern real from fake. Critics argue that tech companies have not done enough to combat the spread of dangerous propaganda.
