An AI agent named Luna has recommended firing a human employee at an experimental retail store in San Francisco after the worker was late for 17 of 23 shifts. The store is part of an experiment by AI research company Andon Labs, which put Luna in charge of operations at Andon Market. The agent handles tasks including choosing products, setting prices and hours, creating workplace policies, posting jobs, interviewing applicants and hiring employees. Luna reviewed the worker's attendance and recommended termination, while also suggesting a final warning and a two-week improvement plan as an alternative. The employee had previously received warnings and additional training. However, Luna did not make the final decision alone. Human staff reviewed the recommendation and conducted the dismissal. The experiment gives AI authority over many business decisions, but humans remain responsible for physical tasks, oversight and employment actions.
