As US-China tech war heats up, scientists find new material to cool quantum computers

A Chinese-led scientific team claims to have discovered a cobalt-based quantum magnetic material with "supersolid" properties that could be used for ultra-low temperatures, crucial for quantum computing. The material could potentially replace helium, which is used as a coolant in quantum applications. Helium, especially helium-3, is scarce, and China relies heavily on imports. The new material, observed cooling below 1 Kelvin, falls within the ultra-low temperature range (0-4.2 Kelvin) required for quantum technologies. The breakthrough is seen as a response to the challenge of obtaining dilution refrigerators, vital for creating ultra-cold environments, which have become harder for China to acquire overseas. The study, published in Nature, suggests a potential alternative to helium-based cooling systems for quantum technologies.
