OpenAI has launched a Locked Chats feature in ChatGPT that lets users secure sensitive conversations with a four-digit PIN or Face ID or Touch ID on compatible devices. The aim is to keep private chats out of view when sharing a screen or device. Locked chats move to a dedicated Locked Chats section, separate from regular history, pinned conversations, and search results. If Memory is enabled, Locked Chats use their own memory that does not update regular Memory. OpenAI clarified that locking does not provide end-to-end encryption, change retention periods, remove previously remembered information, or alter the “improve the model for everyone” setting. Resetting the PIN permanently deletes all locked chats and related content. The feature is not available for temporary, archived, group, or shared-link chats, or those with scheduled tasks or meeting recordings.
