Empower India's study on e-commerce retail practices revealed Amazon and Flipkart as leaders in reducing single-use plastic usage, saving 97,222 metric tons in 2021. BigBasket is piloting a project targeting the removal of packaging from fruit and vegetable deliveries across India by 2023. The improper disposal of non-recyclable packaging materials contributes to environmental issues, emphasizing the need for sustainable packaging practices. Amazon, for instance, has eliminated 100% of single-use thin-film plastic packaging from its Indian fulfillment network since 2020, opting for biodegradable paper tape and paper cushions instead of plastic alternatives. Flipkart and other companies are utilizing machine learning algorithms to optimize packaging, reducing waste and carbon emissions. Empower India commends the government's efforts and urges it to incorporate sustainable practices in green initiatives and discussions across relevant ministries.
