Google has announced new AI initiatives in India spanning crop science, agriculture, education, and small business. Google DeepMind and Google.org, through the AI Collaborative for Food Security, are working with Hyderabad-based ICRISAT and academic partners to build an open-access genetic atlas of sorghum, drawing on a genebank of more than 44,000 seeds from over 90 countries. Machine learning will help identify promising plant combinations so breeders can develop more resilient varieties faster than traditional trial-and-error. Google DeepMind will also fund a three-year postdoctoral fellowship at ICRISAT—its first in India—to build tools for mapping genomes of other crops such as chickpea, groundnut, and pigeon pea. Separately, Google is expanding access to its Agricultural Understanding models in public preview via API for developers and researchers, with insights now covering 11 countries.
