Google challenges cloud rivals by making it free for customers to transfer data when they leave

Google’s latest effort to win cloud deals over larger rivals Amazon and Microsoft involves making it cheaper for clients to leave. Google is aiming to gain an edge in the cloud services market by eliminating data transfer fees for customers migrating away from Google Cloud, criticizing competitors for imposing "punitive" contract terms. In a blog post, Google Cloud VP Amit Zavery announced free network data transfer for global customers leaving the platform, challenging rivals to compete based on technology and service rather than restrictive contracts. Google accuses some unnamed companies of charging exorbitant fees for data transfer to rival clouds, hindering customer choice. Amazon Web Services claims over 90% of its customers pay nothing for data transfer since 2021, citing compliance with the European Data Act. Google's move is seen as pressuring competitors to reconsider their pricing models in the competitive cloud computing landscape.
