Google, Facebook worst at collecting data from apps for kids, finds privacy research group

A recent study conducted by data privacy services firm Arrka has shed light on the alarming extent to which Google and Facebook are major recipients of data collected from children’s apps with Google collecting 33% and Facebook 22% of the data from 60 apps in nine categories. Edtech, childcare, and coding apps access the highest number of dangerous permissions, with two-thirds of childcare and edtech apps having access to children's exact locations. Small recipients like AppsFlyer and AppLovin collectively receive 38% of the data. The research emphasized the importance of compliance with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDPA), passed in August of the previous year, which includes provisions to prevent the misuse of data that could adversely affect children’s well-being. The study underscores a disparity in age-gating mechanisms in Indian apps compared to global ones, highlighting the need for compliance with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act passed in August 2023.
