Google is shutting down Gemini’s Gems feature and migrating it to skills. Gems, launched in 2024, let users create custom AI assistants for specific tasks without repeating instructions. Examples included a learning coach, brainstorming assistant, coding partner and user-made tools such as a running coach or vacation planner. Gems could also be shared. Starting November 17, 2026, Google will automatically convert Gems into skills that can be used across different AI tasks. Users do not need to take action; existing Gems remain usable until they are migrated. Skills are selected by typing a forward slash in a task thread, an interface more familiar to engineers than general users.
