Google Will Pay $700 Million To Settle Antitrust Suit—And Will Change Play Store Billing

Google has agreed to pay $700 million to settle an antitrust suit brought by 36 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. The settlement includes a $630 million payout for consumers and a $70 million fund for states. In a significant change to its Play Store, Google will now allow developers to implement alternative billing options alongside its own system for in-app purchases, introducing ""user choice billing."" This move lowers Google's cut on transactions from 15%-30% to 11%-26% and allows developers to display different pricing options within the app. The settlement and changes address antitrust concerns and follow a similar case brought by Epic Games. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney criticized the settlement, calling it an ""injustice"" that endorses Google's anticompetitive practices. When the settlement was first reported, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney said his company was not party to it. The federal court overseeing the Epic verdict is yet to rule on the remedies Google will have to implement.
