Harvesting water from air with solar power

Researchers from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China have developed a solar-powered atmospheric water harvesting technology to address water scarcity. Over 2.2 billion people live in water-stressed countries, and 3.5 million die annually from water-related diseases. The technology uses a super hygroscopic gel made from plant derivatives and salts to absorb and retain large amounts of water. One kilogram of the gel can adsorb 1.18 kilograms of water in arid environments and up to 6.4 kilograms in humid conditions. The researchers also incorporated desorption and condensation chambers, achieving over 90% water recovery. The system showed promising results in outdoor prototypes, releasing water even in weak sunlight. The technology aims to maximize daily water yield using renewable energy and has potential applications in dehumidification, agriculture irrigation, and electronic device thermal management.
