Project Silica utilizes ultrafast femtosecond lasers to write data in permanent modifications on square glass platters, allowing for layered storage. Polarization microscopy technology and a Z-pattern scan retrieve data, while machine learning aids in signal decoding. The secure nature of archival glass storage makes it suitable for sensitive industries like finance, scientific research, and healthcare, providing resilience against ransomware attacks. Microsoft is actively configuring the physical library for optimal Azure cloud storage use.
