Military installations will soon get private wireless networks

President Joe Biden signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), authorizing $886 billion in annual military spending. The legislation mandates the deployment of private wireless networks on military bases, utilizing 5G and Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) architecture. The Defense secretary must create a strategy within 120 days, ensuring infrastructure supports modular upgrades and streamlining wireless service provider access to military facilities. The move aligns with the Pentagon's shift of 5G-related activities to the DoD chief information officer, emphasizing the critical role of 5G in achieving a disaggregated and distributed force structure. The legislation also allocates $179 million for DoD research into Next Generation Information Communications Technology (5G), supporting Combined Joint All-Domain Command and Control (JADC2) efforts.
