Five US federal agencies have warned that attackers are using AI-generated exploitation scripts to target internet-exposed Siemens S7 Series programmable logic controllers. The joint advisory from the NSA, CISA, FBI, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Agency calls the activity an “active threat.” Attackers combine open-source industrial libraries such as snap7.dll and python-snap7 with AI coding assistants to build tools that mimic legitimate operational technology monitoring software. These tools provide read and write access to PLC memory, configuration data and ladder logic via the S7comm protocol. Targeted sectors include critical manufacturing, energy, water and wastewater, chemical, food and agriculture, and commercial facilities. The use of AI reduces the technical expertise and time needed to develop working industrial control system exploits.
