Notre Dame joins consortium to support responsible artificial intelligence

The University of Notre Dame joins the Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC), established by the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology. In response to a presidential executive order, AISIC aims to mitigate risks associated with AI while fostering innovation. Led by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, the consortium seeks to set safety standards and protect the innovation ecosystem. Notre Dame researchers will contribute advanced measurement techniques to assess AI risks, focusing on dual-use foundation models. With over 200 member companies, academia, civil society, and government entities, AISIC aims to develop safer, more trustworthy AI systems. The consortium prioritizes collaboration among industry leaders, academics, and policymakers to address societal concerns and ensure responsible AI development nationally and globally.
