OpenAI has built a custom Git backend named Pando in just 10 weeks to manage a sharp rise in code activity. Quarterly commits in its monorepo grew 2,442% between Q1 2024 and Q4 2026, largely from engineers and Codex agents working in parallel. Traditional infrastructure struggled with slower pushes, failed merges, and repeated fetches. Pando preserves the standard Git protocol and client while changing server-side handling. It uses causal consistency so unrelated branches can accept updates concurrently, stores packfiles in object storage, and relies on regional caches that achieve hit rates above 99%. Median push latency fell by nearly 80%, and merge reliability reached 99.99%. The system serves nearly one petabyte of Git data daily and has handled more than 57 terabytes of packfiles in a single hour. Built in Rust, its core was designed by one engineer and implemented with teams of Codex agents before entering production in April 2026.
