The Pentagon has launched custom versions of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and xAI’s Grok for its workforce. Called ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government, the tools are now available on GenAI.mil, a secure portal first launched last year with Google Gemini. The platform gives roughly 3 million civilian and military personnel access to generative AI tailored to warfighter needs without routing sensitive data through consumer services. More than 1.7 million unique users have already signed on. ChatGPT Mil supports chat, files, projects and custom GPTs for document-heavy unclassified tasks such as administration, logistics, planning and policy. Grok for Government is positioned for broader uses, including faster mission execution, knowledge continuity and supply-chain work. The move expands the department’s commercial AI options after earlier friction with Anthropic.
