Scots SMEs gain £1m boost via project led by National Manufacturing Institute Scotland to capitalise on industrial 3D printing

A £1 million project by National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) has encouraged over 100 small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Scotland to explore the potential of industrial 3D printing techniques. The three-year Additive Manufacturing Business and Technology Support (AM-Bats) initiative aims to develop more sustainable products and enter new markets. The programme, funded through the Scottish Government’s Advancing Manufacturing Challenge Fund via the European Regional Development Fund, has led to 36 projects across various sectors, including renewable energy, electric vehicles, food and drink, sports, oil and gas, and medicine. Many businesses have created new products or changed existing ones to include 3D printed elements, while others have adopted additive manufacturing due to its benefits such as reduced development times, increased sustainability, design optimization, faster time to market, and the ability to use digital inventories.
