Snowflake has launched Cortex AI Gateway, a runtime control plane for governing AI agents. The layer tracks agent actions, enforces policies and manages spending across first- and third-party models and tools. It builds on technology from Snowflake's May acquisition of Natoma. The gateway applies governance rules defined in Horizon Catalog while routing requests and controlling costs. It is designed to give enterprises visibility into which agent acted, who authorised it, what resources it used and what happened at each step. Analysts note that most existing AI gateways only route models and log prompts, leaving a gap in consistent runtime oversight. The offering combines FinOps and security governance in one plane, useful as consumption-based pricing makes cost tracking harder. For developers it can simplify credentials and logging if implemented well, or become a bottleneck if multiple gateways are required. Cortex AI Gateway is scheduled to enter public preview soon.
