Large language models (LLMs) have gained mainstream consciousness this year as they form the foundation for AI-powered chatbots. These advanced artificial intelligence models perform natural language processing (NLP) tasks. As chatbots evolve, large language models are moving towards multimodal types, trained on different types of data like images, text, and audio. The most prominent large language models released this year include GPT-4, Google Gemini, GPT-3.5, Llama 2, PaLM 2, Claude 2, and Mistral 7B. GPT-4 is the latest AI model from OpenAI, while GPT-3.5 was a watered-down version of GPT-4, described as being "10 times more powerful." Meta AI open-sourced a LLM package called Llama in March, while Google launched PaLM 2, or Pathways Language Model, to rival GPT-4. Anthropic AI focuses on developing powerful AI systems that take safety seriously. Mistral 7B, a Paris-based startup, builds niftier LLMs instead of building a massive LLM to compete with GPT-4 or Gemini.
