US announces 'strongest global action yet' on AI safety

The White House has issued an executive order, described as the most significant action in AI safety, requiring AI developers to share safety results with the US government. This puts the US at the forefront of global AI governance. The UK government is concurrently holding a summit on AI safety, with concerns about AI's rapid advancement, potential bio-weapons, and cyber-attacks.The tech entrepreneur and AI expert Gary Marcus told the BBC the US announcement seemed more ambitious in its scope. "Biden's executive order sets a high initial bar. The executive order is broad, focusing on both current and long-term risks, with some - though probably not enough - teeth," he said. The UK summit appears more focused on long-term risks. US Vice-President Kamala Harris and tech executives are attending the UK summit, but with the EU and China also regulating AI, the extent of meaningful discussions at the summit is in question.
