U.S. Cyber Trust Mark: Security Guidance for IoT Product Designers

The White House has announced the launch of the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark, a consumer cybersecurity labeling initiative aimed at user-friendliness. The Executive Order provides guidance to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to develop standards and recommendations for IoT product developers. The NIST IR 8425 standard, formulated in September 2022, is based on cybersecurity considerations tailored to consumer IoT products, drawing on insights from previous incidents like Mirai malware attacks and unauthorized breaches of home security camera data. Manufacturers of connected consumer devices participating in the cybersecurity labeling program are required to adhere to this NIST guidance and obtain certification for their products. Once certified, they can affix the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark logo to their products and include a QR code for purchasers to confirm certification validity as cybersecurity threats evolve.
