Visa, BILL, and Billtrust have launched a live pilot that enables trusted AI agents to initiate and complete approved buyer invoice payments end-to-end through supplier portals. Many payment portals still require human authentication, which limits how far approved payments can be automated. The pilot uses Visa’s Trusted Agent Protocol so AI agents can be securely authenticated to credentialed portals. An authorized BILL Payment Agent uses tokenized payment credentials and controls aligned with the buyer’s approved payment instructions to issue payments on behalf of BILL customers. Billtrust then recognizes and authenticates the agent and grants access so the invoice payment can be completed without a person logging in to submit it by hand. Benefits cited include a recognized agent acting for an identified buyer, tokenized credentials instead of shared logins, a purpose-built path for the specific invoice, and visibility into authorization.
