WSU alum, inventor of 3D‑printing technology shares his journey

The inventor of the technology used in 3D printing and Washington State University alumnus, Scott Crump told a group of WSU Tri-Cities engineering and business students that to invent new things, you have to break the rules. He is the inventor of Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) technology in 3D printing and co-founder of Stratasys, who advised students to break rules and innovate. Speaking at a Carson College of Business event, Crump shared insights on funding, going public, branding, and team building. He emphasized WSU's hands-on mechanical engineering education as pivotal for his career. Crump's journey with Stratasys involved focusing on customer value, flexible pricing, mentorship, and gradual expansion. Merging with Objet Ltd, the company reached $600 million in revenue. Crump foresees vast opportunities in aerospace, tooling, and product parts in the 3D printing industry. He urged students to pursue their visions, take risks, and prioritize a clear vision over detailed plans.
