More than one-third of English-language web pages published after ChatGPT’s public launch show significant signs of AI authorship or substantial AI editing, according to a Pew Research Center analysis. Researchers examined nearly 490,000 pages drawn from the Common Crawl archive between January 2021 and July 2026, using the Open Pangram detection model. In a random sample of 10,000 pages collected in July 2026, about 10 percent showed AI signals. When pages published before November 2022 were excluded, the share rose to 35 percent. Domain differences were large: roughly 10 percent of .com pages showed AI signals, compared with 4.6 percent of .org pages and about 1 percent of both .edu and .gov pages. Linguistic patterns associated with AI writing also increased, including roughly doubled use of em dashes, a 63 percent rise in Oxford commas, and more frequent use of words such as “delve” and “testament.”
