Amazon has launched a new robotic system that will speed up deliveries in time for this year's holiday shopping season, the company said Wednesday. Called Sequoia, the system is currently operating at one of Amazon's fulfillment centers in Houston. It can identify and store inventory as much as 75% faster than the current system and reduce the processing time by up to 25%, the company said. It's designed to increase the number of goods available for same-day or next-day shipping. By introducing a system that will reduce the amount of time employees have to reach above their heads or squat down to lift orders, the risk of injuries will be decreased. Amazon will also begin testing Digit, a bipedal robot that can grasp items in the corners of warehouses. Initially, it will help employees with tote recycling, which is the highly repetitive process of picking up and moving empty totes after inventory is removed from them.
