The share of junior-level employees in technical departments fell from 21% to 14% since early 2025. By April 2026, engineering and research teams had reduced focus on lower-level technical recruitment. About one-third of machine learning managers and one-fifth of software engineering managers said they were hiring less because of AI. By August 2026, AI agents under employee direction were working six times as many hours as their human handlers. Code commits per engineer rose to five times the level of six months earlier.
