Rakib, a small business owner in Bangladesh, faces challenges due to a lack of localized technological solutions. The startup boom imported ideas without considering local needs and digital illiteracy, with only 6% having full digital literacy. Zubair Ahmed returned to Bangladesh in 2014 to address this issue by creating Hishab, a conversational voice technology powered by telephony networks in Bangla. In 2023, Hishab achieved a breakthrough by developing conversational AI technology, providing a personal intelligent assistant (PIA) accessible via feature phones. Their principal products, HiPay and HiPOS, allow users to perform various tasks through voice interactions, such as transferring money and digitizing accounts. Hishab expanded to India and Japan, collaborating with major institutions and winning awards. This success showcases Bangladeshi-built technology leading in global markets and setting a standard for future innovations emerging from Bangladesh.
