MGM Resorts International reported a cybersecurity issue affecting their online systems on Monday. Cybersecurity experts suspect a widespread cyberattack. MGM Resorts didn't disclose specifics of the disruption but notified law enforcement. According to their statement, specific systems were shut down, and prompt action was taken to protect data and systems. Greg Moody, a cybersecurity expert at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, said that a ""cybersecurity issue"" means someone attacked the company's network. In MGM's case, the attacker(s) may have exploited a security gap to take down their system, according to Dr. Moody, who has worked with MGM's tech team on several projects. Hackers seeking profit usually steal a company's data and demand a ransom for its release. They may also sell the data on an underground marketplace for identity theft. Cyberattacks have hit gas pipelines, hospitals, and grocery chains and may have compromised intelligence agencies.
