Databricks has acquired Row Zero, a cloud spreadsheet built to work directly on live business data. The deal was announced on September 24. Row Zero’s technology will become part of Genie, Databricks’ AI assistant. Finance, sales and operations teams will get a familiar spreadsheet interface on top of governed data. The system sits on Genie Ontology, Unity Catalog and Unity Gateway. Row Zero supports Excel-style formulas, pivot tables and shortcuts. It can handle billions of rows at interactive speeds, respects user permissions and refreshes automatically from the source. Exports can be restricted. The two products were already integrated, letting users ask Genie questions in natural language and see answers in a linked spreadsheet. The Row Zero team, made up of former AWS and Tableau engineers, is joining Databricks. The tool will be available to all Databricks customers across major clouds and will keep supporting external data sources.
