More than 40% of pull requests on GitHub started with an AI agent-generated draft in September 2026, up from 17% in March, according to the company’s Octoverse 2026 report. Agents started 110 million pull requests that month, roughly six times the March volume. The figures rely on GitHub’s detection of agent activity across the platform for the period from 1 October 2025 to 30 September 2026. Agent-started pull requests modified multiple files 87% of the time, compared with 79% for those without detected agent involvement. The share of agent-involved pull requests merged within two weeks rose from 83% in February to 90% in September, while the non-agent rate stayed around 86%. Among monthly active GitHub Copilot users, 55% used agentic features, up from 35% a year earlier. Use of Copilot’s cloud agent grew 230% year over year, and agent chat grew 85%.
