Google has launched the AI Cyber Defense Initiative to enhance global cybersecurity. The initiative includes extensive investments, support for startups, small businesses, academic institutions, and researchers, and the development of new and open-sourced AI security tools. AI is seen as an essential tool for cybersecurity, with over 40% of people viewing it as a top application. The initiative includes Google for Startups: AI for Cybersecurity, a three-month program supporting the next wave of cyber companies, and a US$2m investment in research grants and strategic partnerships. Google will also open-source Magika, an AI-powered tool that aids cyber defenders in file type identification, a crucial part of malware detection. Google is also investing in its secure network of global data centres, investing over US$5bn in Europe from 2019 to 2024. The initiative aims to reverse the "defenders dilemma" by promoting international collaboration and a balanced regulatory approach to AI.
