Google is partnering with the USO to bring Google Beam 3D video communication technology to 20 USO locations worldwide, helping deployed service members connect with families. The rollout uses HP Dimension systems with Google Beam, which create lifelike conversations without glasses or headsets. A pilot earlier this year linked Trzebień, Poland, with Fort Bliss, Texas; the program is expanding to include Grafenwöhr, Germany, and Fort Hood, Texas. Originally developed as Project Starline, Beam uses AI and specialized displays: a 65-inch screen with six cameras captures the participant from multiple angles, and an AI model builds a real-time three-dimensional representation. The display sends different images to each eye for depth, with head tracking and spatial audio supporting natural eye contact and gestures. Google also released a docuseries following four soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 37th Armored Regiment, during deployment in Poland as they used Beam.
