Google has released official Google Cloud API Client Libraries for Swift, aimed at bringing the language more strongly onto the server. The libraries target Swift 6.2 and later and give developers direct access to more than 100 Google Cloud services, including Cloud Storage, AI services, and Identity and Access Management. The SDK is built for servers, containers, and DevOps environments. Applications can be packaged on Linux and deployed to Cloud Run, Google Kubernetes Engine, or Compute Engine virtual machines. It also compiles on macOS, so teams can develop backends on a Mac and run them on Linux. Google highlights Swift 6’s compile-time checks for data races and combines the libraries with Swift NIO for non-blocking networking, HTTP/2, and gRPC. The company explicitly warns against embedding the SDK in iOS, iPadOS, or VisionOS apps because of credential risks, recommending Firebase or a custom backend instead.
