Google to defend multibillion-dollar patent trial over AI technology

Google is facing a federal court trial in Boston over allegations by Singular Computing that the processors powering some of Google's AI technologies infringe on patents held by computer scientist Joseph Bates. Singular claims that Google copied Bates' technology to support AI features in products like Google Search and Gmail. Singular is seeking up to $7 billion in damages, potentially doubling the largest-ever US patent infringement award. The complaint, filed in 2019, alleges that Google's Tensor Processing Units infringe on two patents related to improved circuit architecture developed by Bates, allowing for enhanced processing power. According to Singular, versions two and three of the units, which were introduced between 2017 and 2018, violate its patent rights. Google argues that its processors differ from Singular's patented technologies, deeming the case invalid. The trial outcome will have significant implications for the tech giant.
