India has made significant progress in mobile download speeds, jumping 72 places in the Speedtest Global Index due to the introduction of 5G services. The median download speed in India increased 3.59 times, going from 13.87 Mbps in 2022 to 50.21 Mbps in 2023. This improvement places India ahead of countries like Indonesia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and some G20 nations. India's 4G networks have been unable to keep up with expectations, primarily due to network congestion, poor cellular infrastructure, and spectrum constraints. The boost in speed is attributed to the offloading of 4G traffic onto 5G networks after the 5G spectrum auction. The report also highlights that 5G users in India have a more positive perception of their network operators compared to 4G users. Additionally, 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services have been introduced to provide broadband connectivity in areas where laying fiber is challenging or expensive.
