The Linux Foundation launched the x402 Foundation to oversee an open protocol for payments in AI workflows. The x402 protocol, originally from Coinbase, uses the HTTP 402 status code to let AI agents, applications, and APIs handle payments directly in web requests. It supports cards, stablecoins, and other methods without separate checkout flows. Forty organizations joined, including AWS, Google, Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, and Coinbase. The project targets the gap in machine-to-machine commerce as AI agents call paid services and APIs. It aims for neutral governance to avoid vendor lock-in and ensure security. Developers can integrate it for paid APIs, cloud resources, and digital content. AWS already uses a version in its Bedrock AgentCore Payments. The foundation will develop specifications and extensions collaboratively across payments, cloud, and blockchain sectors.
