Meta has built a humanoid robot prototype in partnership with Chinese robotics firm Fourier. Internally called Max, the robot stands about 1.5 meters tall and weighs 105 pounds. It runs on NVIDIA’s Jetson Thor platform and was developed in roughly three months. The design includes five-fingered hands for handling small objects such as bottles and toys, chest-mounted speakers, and a face that can display expressions. Meta’s targets include voice recognition from about five meters, gesture recognition from three meters, and the ability to maintain eye contact while communicating its operating state. Development of a second version, Max 2, began in September with plans for a redesigned torso, improved hands, a projector, and extra sensors for stairs. Meta describes the work as internal research and experimentation and says it has no plans to sell the robots. The effort is linked to exploring physical embodiments of its Muse AI agent for household tasks.
