Meta to lay off employees in metaverse silicon unit on Wednesday

Meta plans to lay off employees on Wednesday in the metaverse-oriented Reality Labs division unit focused on creating custom silicon, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Tuesday. Employees were informed of the layoffs in a Tuesday post on Meta’s internal discussion forum, Workplace. The post said they would be notified about their status with the company by early Wednesday morning, one of the sources said. A spokesperson for Meta declined to comment on plans. The extent of cuts to Facebook's silicon unit, called FAST, which has 600 employees, is unclear, according to a source. FAST creates custom chips for Meta's Reality Labs division. Meta has partnered with EssilorLuxottica to develop Quest 3 headsets and smart glasses that use AI to communicate with wearers. The company is developing AR glasses and smartwatches. Meta has struggled to compete with external silicon providers and turned to Qualcomm for devices like Quest and Ray-Ban.
