MSMEs urged to collaborate on achieving indigenisation target in defence, aerospace sectors

The Indian government is intensifying efforts to achieve 70% indigenisation in the defence and aerospace sectors in the next 3-4 years. Measures include a substantial five-fold increase in product development funding support for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to INR 50 crore. Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, announced these initiatives at the ‘MSME Defense Week’ event. The Defence Ministry has elevated technology development project funding for MSMEs from INR 10 crore to INR 50 crore, showcasing a commitment to bolstering the sector. Kamat encouraged MSMEs to leverage the Product Development Fund (TDF), a DRDO initiative, revealing that 70 projects have been awarded so far, with INR 295 crore disbursed and 16 technologies indigenised for the Air Force and Navy. Success stories include avionics video processing modules and composite-based submersible pumps.
