Nandan Nilekani: SMEs are the biggest beneficiaries of Digital Public Infrastructure

India's Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), or India Stack, is transforming Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Nandan Nilekani, Infosys co-founder and Aadhaar architect, highlighted its impact at the Global SME Finance Forum 2023. DPI comprises Aadhaar, eSign, Digilocker, UPI, and Account Aggregator, offering open, interoperable systems for essential services. Over 50 million merchants are adopting digital payments, speeding up balance sheet generation and loan approvals. DPI focuses on digital credit access for MSMEs with financial institution collaboration. The MSME sector needs over Rs 100 lakh crore in debt, mostly for working capital, with only a small portion formalized. Information gaps and high costs in the informal sector add complexity. In summary, India's DPI, India Stack, holds immense potential to revolutionize SME finance, enhance financial inclusion, and reduce the credit gap for MSMEs in India and beyond.
