Rampant crime creating a big problem for small businesses and the Memphis economy

Memphis entrepreneurs are facing a rampant crime problem that is making it difficult for them to do business. In the past year, Memphis police report more than 2,200 business burglaries, and restaurants blame crime for their sudden closures. Delivery trucks have also been targeted, and gas stations remain vigilant. Memphis economist John Gnuschke believes that crime is eroding the economic and social fabric of the community, causing neighborhoods to suffer the most. Greater Memphis Chamber President Ted Townsend has formed the Public Safety Accountability Committee to convene and carry business voices and concerns forward. They have been meeting with city and county leaders to discuss short-term and long-term strategies and how the Chamber can help. Townsend demands $50 million for crime reduction, court case backlog, and a new law making stolen firearm possession a felony, while also seeking 40 Memphis-based companies.
