Space-based 5G network will get demo in 2024

Lockheed Martin plans to launch a 5G connectivity payload into orbit in 2024 as part of its 5G.MIL project initiated in 2020 to meet military demands for high-speed wireless communication. The project aims to create an "all-domain network" connecting space assets, aircraft, ships, and ground forces seamlessly. The company successfully tested a 5G nonterrestrial network payload and intends to launch the industry's first regenerative advanced 5G satellite base station to low Earth orbit for a space demonstration. This regenerative payload allows direct satellite-based communication, bypassing terrestrial networks when needed, enhancing resiliency. The satellite base station, with onboard signal processing and radio access network, communicates with other satellites and ground stations. The 5G.MIL project represents a significant step toward establishing robust and resilient communication across various military domains.
