Lockheed Martin plans to launch a 5G connectivity payload into orbit in 2024 as part of its 5G.MIL project initiated in 2020 to meet military demands for high-speed wireless communication. The company successfully tested a 5G nonterrestrial network payload and intends to launch the industry's first regenerative advanced 5G satellite base station to low Earth orbit for a space demonstration. This regenerative payload allows direct satellite-based communication, bypassing terrestrial networks when needed, enhancing resiliency. The satellite base station, with onboard signal processing and radio access network, communicates with other satellites and ground stations.
