The Future of Parkinson Disease Treatment With Innovative Wearable Devices: Alistair Mackett, MD

The increasing prevalence of Parkinson's disease (PD) due to global aging has raised concerns. Wearable devices have emerged as a promising solution to enhance PD patient care and reduce healthcare costs. Recent research in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation indicates that wearable cueing devices can immediately improve walking speed but require more evidence for broader gait and motor function enhancements. At the 2023 International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders, Dr. Alistair Mackett presented a case study of a 77-year-old PD patient with a freezing gait. The study utilized a focused vibrotactile stimulation and curing device (FVCD) and showed a sustained improvement in the Movement Disorder Society Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) III. The patient's baseline score improved from 35 to 29 after device use and remained at 28 during the 4-month follow-up.
