The news is fading from sight on big social media platforms – where does that leave journalism?

A recent survey by the News Media Association reveals that 90% of UK editors see Google and Meta (formerly Facebook) as existential threats to journalism. The concern arises from big tech companies de-prioritizing news content, making it challenging for users to find reliable information. News organizations are reacting by withdrawing from social media platforms to regain control. However, those reliant on platforms face limited control as terms change unpredictably. The decline in news visibility on platforms, described as "platformed publishing," raises risks for the media ecosystem. Meta's actions, like discontinuing the News tab, signal a broader trend, impacting democratic processes by limiting access to verified and trusted news.When people cannot access (or have limited access to) verified and trusted news, other things fill the void. The Israel-Gaza conflict, to take just the most recent example, has seen an increase in disinformation on X.
