The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has put forth principles for governing new AI models, aiming to stimulate competitive growth in the AI sector. These principles focus on accountability, access, and transparency. The CMA began studying the impact of generative AI, like ChatGPT, in May, with the goal of ensuring that AI technology benefits both businesses and consumers. CMA's CEO, Sarah Cardell, emphasized the potential of AI to boost productivity and simplify everyday tasks but stressed the need for proactive measures. “That’s why we have today proposed these new principles and launched a broad program of engagement to help ensure the development and use of foundation models evolves in a way that promotes competition and protects consumers,” she said. The UK, under Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's leadership, positions itself as a global leader in AI regulation and will host an AI safety summit in November.
