The United Nations has partnered with Google to launch the UN System Data Commons, an open platform that makes official global statistics easier for AI systems to access and use. Built on Google’s open-source Data Commons, the system replaces the older UNData portal and lets users search statistics from multiple UN agencies with natural-language queries. It also supports the Model Context Protocol so AI agents can retrieve authoritative figures directly, combine indicators and generate charts or draft analysis. Nearly 20 UN entities are connected at launch, with 26 agencies committed and a target of bringing 80 percent of the UN system’s statistical datasets onto the platform by 2027. Google.org provided $2 million in capacity-building funding and technical support. The system runs on a UN-governed instance and is intended to be maintained and scaled independently by the UN over time. Officials noted that AI outputs still require human review even when grounded in official data.
