University of South Carolina launches autonomous food delivery service

The University of South Carolina, in partnership with Starship Technologies and Grubhub, introduces autonomous robot food delivery services for over 30,000 campus students, faculty, and staff. USC President Michael Amiridis expresses excitement about the new addition. Initially serving the main campus area, the robots navigate sidewalks using advanced technology, delivering from 11 dining options via the Grubhub app. Each robot can transport the equivalent of three shopping bags and is equipped with insulation to maintain food temperature. Capable of crossing streets, climbing curbs, and operating in various weather conditions, the robots utilize machine learning and sensors for navigation. A human monitoring team ensures safety and can intervene if necessary. Starship Technologies, with global commercial operations, anticipates a successful launch at USC, marking another milestone in autonomous delivery innovation.
