The University of Texas at Austin has launched Bevo Lab, a sports analytics and artificial-intelligence research initiative that pairs students, athletics staff, and technology partners. Texas Athletics and the Business of Sports Institute at the McCombs School of Business are collaborating with Dell Technologies, Google Cloud, and SHI International. The lab will start with football and later expand across the university’s 21 varsity sports that involve more than 500 student-athletes. A centralized platform called Bevo Lakehouse will combine previously separate data sources such as game footage and wearable records. An existing football scouting intelligence tool is already reported to save coaches more than 15 hours a week on preparation. Up to 40 students will take part in the first year, with plans to scale to 200 annually. Students will work with Google engineering teams and gain practical experience in data science and AI.
